American icon John Wayne was more interested in sports than acting. He had a football scholarship to the University of Southern California, and took a summer job working on film sets as a prop man. It was there that he met director John Ford, who thought Wayne’s rugged looks belonged onscreen and began using him as an extra and casting him in minor roles until he finally became a star.
